Official Work

Travel has always been an important part of my photography.Living in Japan has given me the opportunity to photograph places ranging from busy cities and mountain communities to remote islands and coastal regions. I am interested in the small moments that often disappear when a place is reduced to a tourist destination—the people, local traditions, changing weather and everyday scenes that give each location its character. When I travel, I rarely begin with a fixed shot list. Instead, I walk, observe and wait for moments that tell me something about the place. A quiet street early in the morning, a fisherman returning to shore, children playing during a local festival or sunlight breaking through clouds can become more meaningful to me than a famous landmark. My approach to travel photography is influenced by my work as a photojournalist. I try to document a place honestly rather than simply creating postcard images. The goal is to create photographs that show not only where I was, but also what it felt like to be there. The photographs in this collection are personal work and were made independently of my official duties.
